Few Ethiopian artists are able to capture the organic essence of a piece the way that Etiye Dimma Poulsen can and that’s probably because few people think the way Etiye does. While we spend our days dealing with the same old song and dance of everyday life – cars, mortgages, bills, wireless home security – Etiye is thinking about ways in which she can redefine both herself and the artistic medium through which she has ultimately chosen to express herself through – the art and practice of sculpting.

When we thinking of sculpting, whimsical images of Leonardo chiseling away at a block of stone come to mind, or we might even think of those people who mold and sculpt with their hands the very essence of their vision. To Etiye, sculpting is a lot like cooking, creating from iron mesh and then clay before sticking her unfinished work into the oven where the rejuvenating fires of creation give birth to yet another masterpiece. It is this approach to art, exhibiting one of the most fundamental actions of a human being, which has allowed her to explore both the roots and the traditions of her people and giving us an art experience like no other.
